Toronto, ON – Canada’s isotope sector is building momentum across infrastructure, production, education, and innovation. Sustaining that progress will rely on a workforce prepared to grow with the sector, supported by institutions that combine applied research, hands-on practical learning, and industry collaboration. Recognizing the importance of that work, the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council (CNIC) is proud to welcome the Brilliant Energy Institute (BEI) at Ontario Tech University as its newest member.
Ontario Tech has built a distinct role within Canada’s nuclear landscape through specialized education that is closely aligned with industry needs. Its Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is home to Canada’s only accredited undergraduate Nuclear Engineering program, preparing graduates to enter the workforce with training in reactor physics, radiation protection, nuclear systems design, and the broader systems that support isotope production and application. Students also gain hands-on experience through a virtual CANDU 9 simulator and Ontario Power Generation’s off-site full-scope simulator for the Pickering and Darlington generating stations, giving them exposure to environments that closely mirror real-world reactor operations.
At the centre of this work is BEI, which brings together researchers, industry and technology partners, policymakers and other stakeholders to advance projects in areas such as advanced and small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), nuclear safety and security, and clean energy integration.
Ontario Tech’s commitment to workforce development extends beyond its degree programs. Through continuous learning and professional education initiatives developed with industry partners, the university also supports mid-career professionals and workers looking to enter or advance within the nuclear sector. One example is its newly established Nuclear Career Accelerator, an industry-aligned program with eight industry partners that provides technical training in areas such as nuclear systems, safety, and regulatory compliance, alongside optional career coaching and job placement support.
The university also contributes to international nuclear collaboration through engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), supporting knowledge exchange, training, and research alignment with global best practices in nuclear science and technology. This international perspective supports Ontario Tech’s growing role as a regional hub for nuclear expertise and talent development and complements the CNIC’s recently announced contributions to IAEA initiatives like Rays of Hope.
