Toronto, ON – July 10, 2026 – The global nuclear sector is fueled by innovation, and the promise of fusion energy is at the forefront of this innovation globally. Like our current nuclear power generation capabilities in Canada, fusion technology holds significant promise for the production and separation of isotopes. Today, the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council (CNIC) welcomes Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco-based nuclear fusion startup, to its growing network of international members working to engage and partner with Canada’s isotope ecosystem.
Marathon Fusion was founded in 2023 by Adam Rutkowski, a former SpaceX engineer and Princeton PhD candidate, and Kyle Schiller, a former science policy fellow at Schmidt Futures. The startup is guided by the vision of its founders, who firmly believe that fusion is humanity’s best path towards abundant, clean and reliable energy.
Marathon Fusion’s work spans three areas: transmutation (the neutron-driven production of radioisotopes and gold as a significant value-add beyond power production), fuel processing, and isotope separation. While the production of isotopes (and gold) may not be the end goal for Marathon Fusion, the revenue from sales of the critical atoms and precious metal can be used to offset the remarkable cost of chasing nuclear fusion.
As the startup continues its innovative efforts, today’s announcement will see Marathon Fusion join the CNIC’s network of over 120 leading Canadian and international organizations representing the full scope of the isotope supply chain, from production and processing to transportation and patient delivery.
“I’m excited to welcome Marathon Fusion as the CNIC’s newest international member at such an important time for our sector. As new technology enables unique isotope production opportunities, we will continue to work alongside all our members to ensure patients have access to high-quality cancer care when they need it most,” said Melody Greaves, Executive Director of the CNIC. “We look forward to supporting Marathon Fusion’s engagement with Canada’s isotope ecosystem and showcasing their progress in the months and years ahead.”
“We are excited to join the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council and engage with Canada’s isotope ecosystem,” said Kyle Schiller, CEO of Marathon Fusion. “Marathon Fusion uses fusion neutrons and novel production pathways to significantly expand the availability of supply-constrained medical isotopes. Joining the CNIC connects us with the partners who will ensure that these isotopes reach the patients who need them.”
