Toronto, ON – September 3rd, 2025 – Canada’s growing isotope sector is powered by research, innovation, and most critically, dedicated workers. Today, the Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council (CNIC) is proud to welcome the Society of United Professionals, a union representing Canadian workers across the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as the newest member of the CNIC’s network.
The Society of United Professionals was founded in 1944 by a group of engineers seeking better working conditions. In the decades since its founding, the Society has grown significantly. It represents over 5,500 professionals at Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) – two of the world’s leading isotope producers. And nearly 500 Society members work for Kinectrics, a global leader in medical isotopes manufacturing and supply.
The Society’s work is fully member-driven, with workers voting on changes ranging from the organization’s constitution and dues increases to the ratification of collective agreements and policies. It is also connected to an expansive global network of labour unions, as Local 160 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, which represents over 90,000 members across North America.
As a CNIC member, the Society joins the CNIC’s network of Canadian and international leaders, and will play an important role in shaping the CNIC’s advocacy, events, and engagement efforts to support future workforce development in the isotope sector.
“The Society of United Professionals is delighted to collaborate with CNIC members across the country to advance the impact of life-saving medical isotopes. From cancer treatment to sterilization and diagnostic imaging, medical isotopes play a critical role in the effective delivery of global healthcare. Our members in the nuclear industry are proud to be part of the medical isotope supply chain and bring extensive expertise to the table,” said Society President Rebecca Caron.
“Canada’s nuclear isotope innovation and leadership is powered by workers, and today’s announcement recognizes the critical role that the members of the Society play in supporting cancer care globally,” said James Scongack, Chair of the CNIC. “As Canada continues to expand its isotope leadership, including by working towards our Isotopes for Hope goal of doubling domestic production by 2030, the Society’s members will continue to be an important part of our progress.”
